Biography
Hrithik Roshan, born Hrithik Rakesh Nagrath, is an Indian actor and producer who works in Hindi cinema and is often called the "millennial superstar".[1][4] He first appeared on screen as a child actor in the 1980s, then became an overnight sensation with his debut as a lead in his father Rakesh Roshan's romantic thriller Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), a launch so frenzied that the public reaction was dubbed "Hrithik Mania".[1][4] Born on 10 January 1974 in Mumbai, he is known for his dancing, his physical transformations and a filmography that moves between romance, science fiction, period drama and action.[1]
He has won six Filmfare Awards, four of them for Best Actor, and appears regularly on Indian lists of the highest-paid and most influential film stars.[2][3] His landmark films include Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), the Krrish superhero series, Dhoom 2 (2006), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and the YRF Spy Universe films War (2019) and War 2 (2025).[1][3] Outside cinema he co-founded the fitness and athleisure brand HRX in 2013 and now runs the production banner HRX Films.[2][8]
His 2026 has been busy. He appeared in an extended cameo as Major Kabir in the YRF spy film Alpha (3 July 2026), signed with the talent agency Anonymous Content in June, and is reported to have a cameo in Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, which releases on 15 October 2026.[6][7][9] His first directorial project, Krrish 4, is in development.[7]
Early life
Roshan was born on 10 January 1974 in Bombay (now Mumbai) into one of Hindi cinema's best-known film families.[1] His father, Rakesh Roshan, is a film director and producer, and his mother, Pinky Roshan, is the daughter of the filmmaker J. Om Prakash.[3] His paternal uncle, Rajesh Roshan, is a music director, and he has an elder sister, Sunaina.[3] His grandfather, the composer Roshan, and the family's long association with the industry meant he grew up on film sets.[1]
His childhood was not easy. Reports say he was born with an extra thumb on his right hand and struggled with a stammer from about the age of six.[14] As a teenager he was also diagnosed with a spinal condition, and his father has said doctors told the family he would never be able to build a strong physique or dance, a prediction he went on to disprove.[10]
He made his screen debut as a six-year-old child actor in the early 1980s, appearing in several films until about 1986.[3] He studied at the Bombay Scottish School and later at Sydenham College in Mumbai, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree.[3] In the 1990s he worked as an assistant director on his father's films, including Koyla and Karan Arjun, learning the craft of filmmaking before he began acting full time.[1]
After years behind the scenes, Roshan was cast in the lead role of his father's film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, where he played a double role alongside fellow debutant Ameesha Patel.[4] The film was made on a budget of about Rs 8 crore and earned roughly Rs 88 crore, and it set the pattern for the collaborations between father and son that would produce some of his biggest successes.[4]
Career
Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000) made Roshan an instant star and brought him both the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut and Best Actor in the same year, a rare double.[4] He followed it with the romantic drama Fiza and the thriller Mission Kashmir, and then appeared in a supporting role in Karan Johar's blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), which became India's highest-grossing film in the overseas market at that time.[2] A series of commercially weaker releases followed before his career recovered.[2]
The recovery came with another of his father's films, the science-fiction drama Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), in which he played a young man with a developmental disability who befriends an alien; the film won three National Film Awards and brought him more Best Actor honours, including an IIFA award.[5] It spawned two sequels, Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013), in which he played the Indian superhero Krishna and his father, and both were successful.[2] In 2006 he also starred as a thief in Dhoom 2, and in 2008 he played the Mughal emperor Akbar opposite Aishwarya Rai in Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar, which brought him another Filmfare Best Actor award.[3]
The 2010s saw him alternate between big commercial films and more demanding roles. He starred in Kites (2010) and Guzaarish (2010), the road-trip comedy Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), the remake Agneepath (2012) and the action film Bang Bang! (2014), and later in Kaabil (2017), which earned about Rs 2.08 billion worldwide.[2][12] In 2019 he played the mathematician Anand Kumar in the biographical film Super 30 and then starred opposite Tiger Shroff in the action thriller War, the film that remains the highest-grossing of his career with about Rs 4.75 billion worldwide.[12]
His recent work includes the remake Vikram Vedha (2022), which earned about Rs 1.35 billion, and Fighter (2024), an aerial action film with Deepika Padukone that earned about Rs 3.44 billion worldwide and was a hit but not a record-breaker.[12] In August 2025 he returned as Major Kabir in War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, opposite the Telugu star Jr NTR.[12] He has also spoken publicly about being typecast, saying in June 2026 that directors refuse to see him beyond a "good guy" image and that he would like to play a morally ambiguous character like Zaffar in Luck by Chance.[10]
In 2026 he appeared in an extended cameo in Alpha, set after the events of War 2; the film, led by Alia Bhatt, received mixed-to-negative reviews, though critics praised his cameo.[6] He is reported to appear in a cameo in Jailer 2, releasing 15 October 2026, and he is attached to Krrish 4, which will mark his debut as director.[7][9]
As a producer, he is making his streaming debut with the Prime Video thriller series Storm through HRX Films, which has also announced the comedy film Mess, directed by Rajesh A. Krishnan, as a second collaboration with Prime Video.[7][8] In June 2026 the talent agency Anonymous Content announced that it had signed him, noting that his films have grossed more than US$600 million over more than two decades.[7]
Personal life
Roshan married Sussanne Khan, the daughter of actor Sanjay Khan, in 2000, and the couple have two sons, Hrehaan and Hridhaan.[10] They separated in 2013 and divorced in 2014, and have continued to co-parent their children; Roshan wrote a public note when Hrehaan turned 20 in March 2026, and the family has been photographed together at events.[10] Britannica also documents a long-running legal dispute between Roshan and the actress Kangana Ranaut, which has been widely covered in the Indian media.[1]
Fitness is central to his public image. He has spoken about how his spinal condition shaped his discipline, shares his workout meals on social media and celebrated his 52nd birthday in January 2026 with a private family trip to Phuket.[10] He launched the athleisure label HRX in 2013, in partnership with Myntra, and it has since expanded into apparel, footwear, gym equipment and fragrances, with recent reports valuing the brand at about Rs 7,300 crore.[2][13]
In April 2026 he published a long post defending VFX-heavy films against online trolling, mentioning Kalki 2898 AD and Baahubali, and he also reacted publicly to the debate over the VFX in the Ramayana teaser.[10] He has also built a real-estate portfolio that includes a sea-facing home in Juhu, Mumbai, a Lonavala farmhouse and commercial office units in Andheri West, which he leased in August 2026 for about Rs 17 lakh a month.[13]
Estimates of his wealth vary widely. The Hurun India Rich List 2026, published on 23 September 2026, reportedly values him at Rs 2,500 crore (about US$300 million), up from Rs 2,160 crore in 2025, driven largely by the rising valuation of HRX, while some websites quote figures above Rs 3,000 crore and one site as low as Rs 540 crore; because these are unaudited estimates, they should be treated as approximate.[13]
