Biography
Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an Indian actress, producer, singer and entrepreneur who is among the few South Asian stars to have built major careers in both Bollywood and Hollywood.[1][2] Born on 18 July 1982 in Jamshedpur, she won the Miss World title in 2000, made her acting debut in 2002, and became one of Hindi cinema's top leading ladies before heading to the United States, where she became the first South Asian to lead an American network drama through the ABC series Quantico (2015-18).[1][3][14]
She has won a National Film Award for Best Actress for Fashion (2008), and Wikipedia credits her with two National Film Awards, one of them for the Marathi film Paani produced by her company, along with five Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri (2016).[1][2][13] Her later films include The White Tiger (2021), The Matrix Resurrections (2021), Love Again (2023), the Prime Video action comedy Heads of State (2025) and the pirate adventure The Bluff (2026), and she also leads the Amazon series Citadel.[2][4]
In 2026 she is one of the most visible Indian stars on the global stage. She presented at the Golden Globes in January and the Oscars on 15 March, was named an ambassador of the 2026 LVMH Prize final in Paris in September, and is preparing for her return to Indian cinema in S. S. Rajamouli's epic Varanasi, scheduled for release on 7 April 2027.[4][5][6][8][9]
Early life
Chopra was born on 18 July 1982 in Jamshedpur, in what was then the state of Bihar and is now part of Jharkhand, to two doctors in the Indian Army, Ashok and Madhu Chopra.[3][14] She has a younger brother, Siddharth, and she is related to the actresses Parineeti Chopra, Meera Chopra and Mannara Chopra, who are her cousins.[1] Because of her parents' postings, she grew up in several Indian cities and also lived for a time in the United States before returning to India to finish school.[1][14]
After finishing school, she entered the Femina Miss India competition in 2000, where she placed second and won the title Miss India World.[13] At the Millennium Dome in London on 30 November 2000 she was crowned Miss World 2000, the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and at 18 years old she was also named Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty for Asia and Oceania.[1][14] She has said that she had intended to study criminal psychology before the pageant changed her direction.[14]
The pageant victory brought film offers. She made her screen debut in the Tamil film Thamizhan (2002), opposite Vijay, and her Hindi debut followed in The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003).[14] The same year she appeared in Andaaz, which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[1]
Career
Chopra won over critics and audiences in the mid-2000s. She received the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for playing a manipulative woman in Aitraaz (2004), and she followed it with commercial hits including Krrish and Don (both 2006).[1] Her breakthrough as a serious actress came with Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion (2008), in which she played a model whose career falls apart, and the role won her both the National Film Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.[1]
She built on that success with performances in Kaminey (2009), 7 Khoon Maaf (2011), for which she received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress, Barfi! (2012), and the biographical sports film Mary Kom (2014).[1][5] She then appeared in the ensemble drama Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and as Kashibai in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani (2015), which brought her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.[1]
In 2015 she moved to the United States to star as the FBI recruit Alex Parrish in the ABC thriller Quantico, which ran for three seasons and made her the first South Asian to lead an American network drama; she also won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Actress in a New TV Series.[1][5][14] She then made her Hollywood film debut in Baywatch (2017) and appeared in Isn't It Romantic (2019) and in Shonali Bose's Hindi drama The Sky Is Pink (2019), which her own company produced.[1][2]
In 2021 she starred in the Netflix drama The White Tiger and in The Matrix Resurrections, and her memoir Unfinished became a New York Times bestseller.[2][13] She then starred in the romantic drama Love Again (2023) opposite Sam Heughan and in the Amazon spy series Citadel (2023).[2]
Her recent work includes Heads of State (2025), an action comedy co-starring John Cena and Idris Elba that was released on Prime Video in July 2025 and received mixed reviews but strong audience interest.[3][13] On 25 February 2026 she appeared in The Bluff, a Prime Video adventure in which she plays a former pirate confronting her past.[4][13]
Her next big project is Varanasi, a globe-spanning adventure directed by S. S. Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran, in which she plays Mandakini.[8][9] It is her first Indian film since 2019 and her first Telugu film since 2013, and it is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 7 April 2027, with the title and first footage unveiled at a launch event in Hyderabad in late 2025.[3][8][9] On a July 2026 episode of the Jonas Brothers' podcast Hey Jonas, she and her husband Nick Jonas also revealed that they are developing a film together.[7]
Personal life
Chopra married the singer and actor Nick Jonas in December 2018 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, with Christian and Hindu ceremonies held over two days.[1][13] Their daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, was born in January 2022.[1][5] The couple often appear together at major events: in 2026 they attended the Golden Globes in January, turned the Oscars on 15 March into a date night, and went to the Dior Haute Couture show in Paris in July.[4][5][12] In July 2026 she was also photographed at Wimbledon in the Royal Box, where she made a FaceTime call to Nick during a match.[5] She has also spoken publicly about speculation concerning her marriage, which she described as very hurtful, and about the career advice she hopes to give Malti.[5]
Beyond acting, she is an active producer and entrepreneur. She founded the production company Purple Pebble Pictures in 2015, whose projects include the Marathi film Ventilator, The Sky Is Pink and Paani, which won the National Film Award for best film on environment conservation.[2][13] In 2021 she launched the haircare brand Anomaly, which is sold in the United States, and she has invested in the dating app Bumble and was associated with the New York restaurant Sona.[10][13]
She has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and was named to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in 2016 and, in the same year, received the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours.[3][13] She also holds brand partnerships with luxury names including Bvlgari and Rolex.[10]
Estimates of her wealth vary. Indian outlets in 2026 put her net worth at around Rs 650 crore, while some other sites give figures of US$70 million to US$100 million, and one lists a combined fortune of about Rs 1,250 crore with Nick Jonas; because these are unaudited estimates, they should be treated as approximate.[10][11]
